#GivingTuesday – Support A Cause

GivingTuesdayIt’s almost Thanksgiving and that means all the usual craziness of Black Friday and Cyber Monday when everyone tries to get all their holiday shopping done in a few days, often starting at 4 in the morning.

But another exceptionally cool movement has blossomed from the conspicuous consumption of the holidays. It’s much more suited to the spirit of Thanksgiving and might help us focus on what’s really important.

#GivingTuesday has officially become the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. In 2012, the 92nd Street Y, a cultural center in New York City, together with the United Nations Foundation and several other big-name online, social media, and tech partners, announced #GivingTuesday to celebrate and encourage giving around the world. Since then, according to Wikipedia, 84 million dollars has been donated through major online donation services. And this doesn’t include direct donations of time and money that have been encouraged by this new day of giving.

The #GivingTuesday website has tools and resources for nonprofits to leverage social media and the generosity of people around the world to make positive changes in their communities and provides a platform for nonprofits to encourage volunteering, and donation of talent and resources.

GivingTuesday.org is promoting giving with a “Share Your Giving Story” campaign. You’re invited to share your story of support for a favorite nonprofit and you could win $5000 for the charity of your choice.  You can visit #MyGivingStory, GivingStory Facebook, or look for it on twitter at @GivingTues.

It’s a big idea with big goals, but it starts with you. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, let’s remember that there are many with needs larger than ours and give what we can to support this idea, even if we can only manage kindness and encouragement to someone who needs it.

GiveStream encourages you to find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving. Be a part of a global celebration of a new tradition of generosity.
